Overview

Problemista is a comedy film directed by Julio Torres that had a limited release on March 1, 2024, followed by a wide release on March 22, 2024. The story follows Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer and immigrant from El Salvador who is living in Bushwick, New York City. As a child, Alejandro was raised by his mother Dolores, an artist who encouraged his imagination. As an adult, he struggles to bring his unusual ideas to life while facing the expiration of his work visa, which presents immigration as a literal maze of drab cubicles with an hourglass counting down his days until deportation. In order to stay in the country and realize his dream, Alejandro takes a job assisting an erratic art-world outcast. The A24 feature film stars Julio Torres as Alejandro, alongside Tilda Swinton, and features a supporting cast that includes Catalina Saavedra, James Scully, Larry Owens, Laith Nakli, Kelly McCormack, Spike Einbinder, Greta Titelman, and River L. Ramirez.
