Overview
Last Orders is a 2001 drama film written and directed by Fred Schepisi. The screenplay is based on the 1996 Booker Prize winning novel of the same name by Graham Swift. The story follows the journey of four men, Ray, Lenny, Vic, and Jack’s foster son Vince, as they travel from London to the seaside resort of Margate. They are fulfilling a final request made by Jack Dodd, a London butcher who spent over 50 years enjoying drinks with his friends. Jack died while watching a horse race on which he had placed a bet using borrowed money. His request was to have his ashes scattered in the sea at Margate. As the group travels to the coast, the narrative weaves together their memories of Jack and his wife, Amy. The film explores the threads of their lives, loves, and disappointments throughout the journey. The cast includes Michael Caine, Tom Courtenay, David Hemmings, Bob Hoskins, Helen Mirren, and Ray Winstone. The film has a runtime of one hour and 49 minutes.
