Overview
Far North is an independently produced drama, thriller, romance, and crime film released in 2008 and directed by Asif Kapadia. The screenplay is based on a short story written by Sara Maitland. The narrative, which features narration by the character Saiva, explores the life of a woman living in the arctic. At the time of her birth, a shaman declared that Saiva was evil and would bring harm to anyone who became involved with her. Following this prophecy, she was cast out of her tribe of herders and eventually adopted an infant named Anja. The two women maintain a nomadic existence in the isolated arctic wilderness. Their lives change when Loki, an injured and starving soldier, stumbles upon them. Although the women nurse the stranger back to health, his arrival leads to treachery, violence, and doom for all involved. The film screened at various festivals in 2007 and 2008 before receiving an American DVD release on September 23, 2008. It has a total runtime of one hour and twenty-nine minutes.
