Dear Inspector is a 1978 French comedy that follows a chance encounter between two former university acquaintances. When Lise’s car collides with Antoine’s bicycle, the two recognize each other from a brief romance that took place twenty years earlier while they were students at the Sorbonne. In the present, Antoine is a professor of Greek and Lise works as a police inspector, a fact she is reluctant to reveal. Their tentative reconnection is interrupted by a murder investigation: a Deputy of the National Assembly has been killed, and Lise, leading the case, identifies another Deputy as a suspect. As she pursues the investigation, every clue points toward Christine Vallier, the deceased Deputy’s 22‑year‑old mistress whose mother operates the Assembly’s snack bar. The situation becomes more complicated when additional deputies are murdered and Antoine discovers Lise’s true profession. The film stars Annie Girardot as Lise and Philippe Noiret as the Greek professor, blending elements of romance, comedy, and a police procedural.
