He was the son of a scrap merchant and a housewife and grew up in Belleville during the Occupation. At the age of ten, he contracted tuberculosis and spent time in the country in Sarthe, where he learned to ride horses, developing a lifelong love for them. In Paris, he frequented the Danube cinema and attended the Lycée Voltaire secondary school while playing the clarinet in nightclubs in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Known for appearing in over one hundred films over more than thirty years, he was best known for his role as the fictional television private detective Nestor Burma.
