American Idol is a television singing competition series created by Simon Fuller that premiered on June 11, 2002. Originally titled American Idol: The Search for a Superstar, the first season concluded on September 4, 2002. The series format involves twelve finalists, consisting of six men and six women, competing in a singing contest.
