American Idol is a television singing competition series created by Simon Fuller that premiered on June 11, 2002. The program features hopeful singers from across the country who audition for the opportunity to become a recording star. Originally titled American Idol: The Search for a Superstar, the first season concluded on September 4, 2002. The series format involves twelve finalists, consisting of six men and six women, competing in a singing contest. Winners are determined by viewers in America through telephone, internet, and SMS text voting. The first season was co-hosted by Ryan Seacrest and Brian Dunkleman. Other individuals associated with the show include judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell, as well as Mark Thompson and director Bruce Gowers.
