Ullman studied at the Italia Conti School in London and began her career as a dancer and singer in various musicals on London West End stages, as well as working as a dramatic actress on stage. Her early television work includes playing the character Lisa Mackenzie in the British soap opera Mackenzie. Her film credits include appearing in the 1985 film Eine demanzipierte Frau alongside Meryl Streep and taking on a leading role in the 1990 comedy Ich liebe Dich zu Tode alongside Kevin Kline.
