Overview

Set in a 19th-century European village, the story follows a shy young man who is about to be married. During the process of practicing his wedding vows, he inadvertently finds himself in the presence of a deceased young woman. She rises from the grave, assuming that he has married her, and whisks him away to the underworld. While the groom is trapped in this new realm, his real bride waits for him in the land of the living. The film premiered at the 62nd Venice International Film Festival on September 7, 2005. It was subsequently released in theaters in the United States on September 23, 2005, and in the United Kingdom on October 13, 2005. The production received a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 78th Academy Awards and achieved both critical and commercial success upon its release.
