Todd Phillips is an American filmmaker born Todd Philip Bunzl on December 19, 1970, in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, though sources also note a birthday of December 20, 1970. He began his career in 1993. During the 2000s, he directed films including Road Trip, Old School, Starsky and Hutch, and School for Scoundrels. He achieved wider prominence in the early 2010s for directing The Hangover film series. In 2019, he co-wrote and directed the psychological thriller Joker, based on the DC Comics character, which premiered at the 76th Venice International Film Festival and received the Golden Lion. The film earned him three Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
