Richard Hale, born James Richards Hale on November 16, 1892, in Rogersville, Tennessee, was an American opera and concert singer who later became a character actor in film, stage, and television. He attended Columbia University on a singing scholarship and graduated in 1914. Rather than joining the English department at Columbia, he joined Minnie Maddern Fiske's theater group. He made his debut at Aeolian Hall in 1921, launching a successful career as a baritone that included tours of the United States and Europe. Due to his appearance, Hale was frequently cast as Middle Eastern or Native American characters throughout his acting career. He passed away on May 18, 1981, at the age of 88.
