Paul Mantee was born Paul Marianetti on January 9, 1931, in San Francisco, California. He studied as a journalism major at San Mateo Junior College and served a four-year enlistment in the United States Navy during the Korean War, which influenced his decision to pursue acting. He later graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. His stage name was adopted from the character played by Humphrey Bogart in The Petrified Forest. Mantee starred in a handful of films, including the cult classic Robinson Crusoe on Mars, which received a restored release by The Criterion Collection in 2007. He also made numerous guest appearances on television shows and authored two novels. Mantee passed away on November 7, 2013, at the age of 82.
