Ned Thomas Beatty (July 6, 1937 – June 13, 2021) was an American actor whose career spanned more than five decades and encompassed a wide range of supporting and character parts. He first attracted broad attention with his role as executive Bobby Trippe in the 1972 adventure film Deliverance, and continued to appear in high‑profile projects such as the 1975 drama Nashville, in which he played Tennessee lawyer Delbert Reese, and the 1976 political thriller All the President’s Men, where he portrayed general attorney Dardis. Beatty’s versatility was further demonstrated in the 1976 satirical drama Network, the 1977 horror sequel Exorcist II: The Heretic as priest Edwards, and the 1978 superhero film Superman, in which he appeared as Lex Luthor’s henchman Otis. He also took part in the 1980 television film Stříbrný blesk, credited as Bob Sweet, and later returned to the screen in the 2004 adaptation of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Throughout his career Beatty earned critical recognition, receiving an Academy Award nomination, two Emmy nominations, a Golden Globe nomination, and winning a Drama Desk Award for his performances in works such as Network (1976), the television movie Friendly Fire (1979), Last Train Home (1990), Hear My Song (1991) and the 2004 adaptation of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. His prolific output and reliable presence on screen led to a reputation as “the busiest actor in Hollywood.”
