Biography
Sir Jonathan Wolfe Miller CBE was an English theatre and opera director, actor, author, television presenter, humourist, comedian, and physician. Born in London, England on July 21, 1934, he trained in medicine and specialised in neurology in the late 1950s before coming to prominence in the early 1960s in the comedy revue Beyond the Fringe alongside Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, and Alan Bennett. Miller began directing operas in the 1970s, notable for his 1982 Mafia-styled production of Rigoletto set in 1950s Little Italy, Manhattan. He served as an associate director at the National Theatre in its early days and later ran the Old Vic Theatre. As a writer and presenter of more than a dozen BBC documentaries, Miller died on November 27, 2019 at the age of 85.
