John Ford, born Sean Aloysius O’Fearna on 1 February 1894 in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, United States, later used the names Jack and John Ford. He died on 31 August 1973 at the age of 79. Ford’s directing career spanned more than five decades, during which he helmed over 140 films, although most of his silent work is now lost. He is especially noted for westerns such as Stagecoach (1939), The Searchers (1956) and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), as well as literary adaptations including The Grapes of Wrath (1940). Ford received four Academy Awards for Best Director (1935, 1940, 1941, 1952), a record, and his film How Green Was My Valley (1941) also won Best Picture. He is widely regarded as a pivotal and influential filmmaker of his generation.
