John Denver, born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. on December 31, 1943, in Roswell, New Mexico, was an American singer-songwriter, record producer, actor, activist, and humanitarian. His parents were Erma Louise and Captain Henry John Dutch Deutschendorf Sr. Growing up in a military family, he traveled and lived in numerous locations, and at age 11 he received an acoustic guitar from his grandmother, learning to play well enough to perform at local clubs during college. He began his music career with folk music groups in the late 1960s and achieved his greatest commercial success as a solo singer. In the 1970s, he became one of the most popular and best-selling acoustic artists of the decade, and by 1974 he was one of America's best-selling performers. Alongside his music career, he had a minor acting career, with his most notable film being Oh, God! made in 1977. In 1994, he wrote an autobiography titled Take Me Home. John Denver passed away on October 12, 1997.
