Jan Ladislav Rubeš was a Czech-Canadian bass opera singer and actor born on June 6, 1920, in Volyně, Czechoslovakia. He graduated from the Conservatory of Music in Prague in 1945 and became the youngest basso singer for the Prague Opera House, while also performing leading roles at the Pilsen Opera House. In 1948, he represented Czechoslovakia at the International Music Festival in Geneva, winning first prize in his category. He emigrated to Canada on New Year's Eve in 1948 to pursue a greater musical career and gained recognition as a member of the Canadian Opera Company for roles such as Boris in Boris Godunov and Schigolch.
