George Andrew Romero (February 4, 1940 – July 16, 2017) was an American‑Canadian film director, screenwriter, editor and actor born in New York City, New York, USA. He is best known for pioneering gruesome and satirical zombie cinema, most notably the seminal Night of the Living Dead (1968) and its sequel Dawn of the Dead (1978). Romero’s career was largely rooted in the horror genre, yet he also directed notable works outside the zombie subgenre, including the vampire film Martin (1977) and the EC Comics‑inspired anthology Creepshow (1982). Over his lifetime he contributed to more than one hundred credited productions and remained a central figure in horror filmmaking until his death at age 77.
