Elke Sommer is a German actress, entertainer, and artist born on November 5, 1940, in Berlin, Germany. Born Elke von Schletz, she changed her surname to Sommer in 1958 because it was easier to pronounce for a non-German audience. While on holiday in Italy, she was spotted by film director Vittorio De Sica and began appearing in films there in 1958. She quickly became a noted sex symbol and one of the most popular pin-up girls of the time, posing for several pictorials in Playboy magazine, including the September 1964 and December 1967 issues. She moved to Hollywood in the early 1960s and became one of the top film actresses of the decade, starring in many Hollywood films and accumulating 154 known credits in acting.
