Edward Regan Murphy is an American actor, voice actor, film director, producer, comedian, and singer. Born on April 3, 1961, in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, he was raised in the Bushwick neighborhood. His mother, Lillian Lynch, worked as a telephone operator, and his father, Charles Edward Murphy, was a transit police officer who also performed as an amateur comedian and actor. Murphy began his career performing stand-up comedy as a teenager. Recognized as a dominant comedic voice in the United States during the 1980s, he is known for his personal, observational, and occasionally raunchy comedy style, as well as his skills as an impersonator. He is currently identified as the second-highest grossing actor in motion picture history.
