Brenda Marshall was an American film actress born as Ardis Ankerson on September 29, 1915, in Negros, Philippines. She made her first film appearance as Ardis Gaines in the 1937 film Wives of Tomorrow, and her initial billing as Brenda Marshall came in the 1939 film Espionage Agent. In 1940, she played the leading lady to Errol Flynn in The Sea Hawk. Following her divorce from actor Richard Gaines in 1940, she married actor William Holden in 1941, and her career subsequently slowed. She later starred opposite James Cagney in the 1942 film Captains of the Clouds and appeared in the popular success The Constant Nymph in 1943 before virtually retiring. Brenda Marshall died on July 30, 1992.

The following year, Marshall achieved prominent recognition when she played the leading lady opposite Errol Flynn in the 1940 film The Sea Hawk. Her career continued with a starring role alongside James Cagney in the 1942 film Captains of the Clouds, followed by the popular success The Constant Nymph in 1943.

Following her marriage to actor William Holden in 1941, her career quickly slowed down. She virtually retired after 1943, appearing in only four more inconsequential films. Among her later roles, she played scientist Nora Goodrich in the 1946 film Stra. Marshall passed away on July 30, 1992.
