Biography
Anthony Minghella, CBE, was an English film director, screenwriter, and playwright who was born in Ryde on the Isle of Wight, England, on January 6, 1954, to Italian parents. Before beginning to write plays in 1981, he lectured in literature at the University of Hull. He served as Chairman of the Board of Governors at the British Film Institute between 2003 and 2007. Minghella won the Academy Award for Best Director for the film The English Patient, which also won the BAFTA Award for Best Film and the Golden Globe Award for Best Director. He was also known for directing the films The Talented Mr. Ripley and Cold Mountain. Minghella passed away on March 18, 2008, at the age of 54.
