Paris Launches Lottery Offering Burial Plots In Iconic Cemeteries…

by archytele

Paris has launched a lottery with an unusual prize: the chance to be buried in one of its iconic cemeteries.
According to City Hall, the initiative aims to restore neglected tombs while giving residents a rare opportunity to secure burial plots.
Cemeteries within Paris have been nearly full since the early nineteen hundreds, with strict regulations complicating the clearing of abandoned graves.
Lottery winners will be allowed to buy and restore one of 30 tombs across Père-Lachaise, Montparnasse, and Montmartre cemeteries.
Père-Lachaise Cemetery is the final resting place for several famous figures, including Jim Morrison, lead singer of The Doors; playwright Oscar Wilde; and singer Édith Piaf.
The city will then lease the corresponding plot to those who meet restoration standards.
