Panagia – The Miraculous Icon of Tinos (28 min. 2025)

In 1821, in the dream of an old gardener, Panagia – Mary, mother of God – asked him to arrange a search for an ancient icon. But they found nothing. In 1822, Panagia came to the nun Pelagia in the Kechrovouniou monastery to ask for a renewed search, and for the restoration of a church. Now the ruins of an old church were found, but since no icon was found once again interest in the endeavor was lost. Yet, in 1823 a more focused search was carried out in the ruins, and now the icon was found on the site where the main church was to be built.
This was at the time the Greek war of independence broke out, and news about the icon was received with enthusiasm, and soon the erection of a large church began. The war was a revolt against the Muslim Ottoman empire, and immediately the icon was connected to the fight for national and religious independence. The icon in the church on the island of Tinos became a national sanctuary.
The film «Panagia – The Holy Icon of Tinos» takes us to the Cycladic island of Tinos to take part in the greatest feast of the year celebrating the Virgin Mary. From all parts of the Orthodox world pilgrims flock to venerate Panagia, «The holy above all other (saints)», by honoring the icon of the Annunciation.
