Columbia’s Jelani Cobb on His New Book of Essays, “Three or More Is a Riot”

by archytele

Jelani Cobb, dean of Columbia University Journalism School, has a new, powerful collection of his dispatches, mostly written for The New Yorker, over the last decade. In “Three or More Is a Riot: Notes on How We Got Here, 2012-2025,” Cobb takes readers to the front lines of sometimes violent conflict, and uses his gifts as a critic and historian to crack open the meaning of the chaos in America over the last 13 years.

“I think a lot of books start from a moment of reflection,” Cobb told Columbia News. “I started thinking about the way in which I had written in different times and different eras, and I realized that in doing a collection of that work I would also be making a comment about an era … and that it might be useful for people reading right now and reading in the future.”

“Three or More Is a Riot” is available October 14, 2025.
