For many modern American players, the path to professional soccer is paved by elite academies and high-tech training facilities. For Desmond Armstrong, however, the spark was ignited by a television set in a quiet Maryland suburb. After his family moved from the Southeast part of Washington DC to a largely white neighborhood in Maryland, Armstrong found himself drawn to a game that felt foreign to his surroundings. The connection was made through a soccer coach’s son and a glimpse of greatness on a screen. “It was Pele,” says Armstrong. “His movement reminded me of a lot of the point guards that played basketball, but he was doing it with a ball at his feet.” That visual of the Brazilian icon in a New York Cosmos jersey provided more than just inspiration; it provided a sense of belonging. At a time when diversity in the sport was minimal, Armstrong noted the significance of his own position within the team. “He was one of the few black players on the team, so that connected me.” Armstrong’s rise was not a foregone conclusion. He has admitted that his trajectory was heavily dependent on his family’s socioeconomic mobility. “If my folks didn’t move into the suburbs, then hands down I’m not playing soccer,” he says.

Surviving the Void Left by the NASL

The structural stability Armstrong needed to build a career vanished just as he was coming of age. The collapse of the North American Soccer League (NASL) in 1985 created a massive vacuum in the American professional landscape, leaving a generation of players without a clear outdoor destination. For Armstrong, who was a college player at the time, the disappearance of the league was a devastating blow to his professional prospects. “For me, personally, that was crushing,” Armstrong says. To stay in the game, Armstrong had to pivot. He turned to the Major Indoor Soccer League, a move that required adapting his skills to a faster, more confined version of the sport. While it was a detour from the traditional outdoor path, his performances in the indoor circuit eventually forced the hand of national team selectors. By 1987, Armstrong had earned his debut for the U.S. men’s national team, a milestone that would eventually lead him to the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Fighting for Turf and a Place on the World Stage

The era in which Armstrong played was characterized by a struggle for legitimacy. The United States was a peripheral figure in the global football community, a reality that made the 1994 decision to host the World Cup even more significant. According to BBC reporting, the player pool during this period was a fragmented collection of college athletes, semi-professionals, and indoor players. There was no elite outdoor infrastructure to support them. “The US was not a factor in world soccer at all,” says Frank Dell’Apa, a veteran football columnist. Players like Armstrong were essentially pioneers working in a vacuum. They lacked the manicured grass pitches found in Europe or South America, often forced to battle for space and recognition on inferior surfaces. “I remember Des playing a lot of games on artificial turf. It was hard for those guys. They had to fight to get into line-ups, to get a playing field, to get a stadium.” Despite these obstacles, the sense of purpose remained. Armstrong recalls the emotional weight of representing his country during that formative period. “I remember being on the field, hearing the national anthem and just thinking ‘this is where I’m supposed to be’,” he says.

The Economic Barriers of American Soccer

As the 2026 World Cup approaches, a central tension from Armstrong’s era remains: the cost of entry. While the modern game is more professionalized, the American model has long been criticized for its reliance on a “pay-to-play” system. Unlike the youth academies of Ajax or Barcelona, which invest heavily in finding and nurturing talent regardless of background, the U.S. system often requires families to shoulder massive financial burdens to secure advancement for their children. This creates a barrier that favors the affluent and excludes those from less wealthy households. Frank Dell’Apa has noted that this structure feels fundamentally at odds with the spirit of the sport. “It’s kind of antithetical to what this game’s all about,” says Dell’Apa. “This is the simplest game with the easiest access. Everybody plays it around the world with no money, no soccer balls, no shoes. And here, we had just the opposite thing going on.” The legacy of players like Armstrong is a reminder that the growth of soccer in the United States has always been a fight against both a lack of infrastructure and a lack of accessibility. As the country prepares to host the world once again, the challenge remains to ensure that the next generation of talent is defined by skill rather than socioeconomic status.
