On December 15, the Hanoi People’s Court sentenced Ngo Phuong Mai (born 1995, in Ba Dinh, Hanoi) to 10 years in prison for “Abuse of trust and appropriation of property”.
Ngo Phuong Mai took advantage of her position as a cashier and appropriated money from 116 customers.
According to the indictment, Mai worked as a cashier at Thu Cuc Cosmetic Hospital, with the task of making vouchers, collecting money from customers who came to use the service and then submitting it to the general staff at the end of the day.
In July 2020, Mai collected more than 2.7 billion VND from 116 customers in cash or transfer to her personal account. However, I did not return tomorrow to the hospital.
Every day, when the general staff comes to collect money, Mai claims reasons such as being sick, not being present, customers paying by credit card… to not have to pay. Through this, she appropriated more than 2.7 billion VND.
Mai used this money to gamble on kebet77.net and ku.ku711.com but “lost it all”, the indictment stated.
When Thu Cuc Hospital discovered, Mai’s family helped her repay more than 1.5 billion VND, currently missing nearly 1.2 billion VND. In court, Mai’s relatives said they had to: “Sell the house to pay the debt on behalf of the child but it’s still not enough. I hope the court will give me more time to continue overcoming the consequences.”
Defendant Mai pleaded guilty and just hoped to return soon to take care of her children. On the contrary, Thu Cuc Cosmetic Hospital proposed “strict handling”.
The hospital representative explained that Mai had been given many opportunities to fix the problem, but she did not cooperate. The hospital also had to go to the defendant’s mother’s house and mother-in-law’s house to ask them to text: “Try to repay and don’t need to repay all to avoid being denounced.”
After that, Mai went to the hospital and promised to refund the remaining money, but then “no news” came out. Her behavior caused difficulties for the hospital, so she reported it to the police.
