A large-scale police operation in Rio de Janeiro resulted in at least 64 deaths and 81 arrests, according to Brazilian officials.
According to the Associated Press, approximately 2,500 police officers and soldiers conducted a major raid targeting a drug trafficking gang in Rio de Janeiro.
Police reported that the operation deployed officers in helicopters and armored vehicles to target the Red Command in the low-income favelas of Complexo de Alemao and Penha.
The operation led to the deaths of 60 suspects and four police officers, the arrest of 81 individuals, and the seizure of 93 rifles and over half a ton of drugs.
The state government confirmed the seizure of rifles and drugs, adding that those killed “resisted police action.”
Experts have described the operation as one of the deadliest in Brazil’s recent history.
An unspecified number of people were injured, at least 46 schools closed, and residents were advised to seek shelter.
