Yet cold alone did not finish it. When sunlight was removed, some spores persisted, revealing that the combination of factors—not any single stressor—is what ultimately limits survival. This matters because on Mars, temperature swings, radiation, and dust rarely occur in isolation.

As Kasthuri Venkateswaran of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory noted, “Microorganisms can possess extraordinary resilience to environmental stresses.” His team’s work highlights a gap in planetary protection: while bacterial spores have long been the focus, fungi like this one may be harder to rule out.

The finding does not mean Mars is contaminated, or even likely to be. But under the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which requires avoiding harmful contamination of other worlds, knowing what might survive the trip is essential for mission design.

Key detail: Current guidelines allow no more than 300 microbial spores per square meter on spacecraft headed to Mars.

Current cleaning protocols reduce but do not eliminate microbial hitchhikers. The study shows that even after decontamination, certain fungi retain the capacity to endure the vacuum, cold, and radiation of space travel—at least long enough to pose a theoretical risk.

For now, the fungus remains a laboratory curiosity. But as missions to Mars grow more frequent and ambitious, understanding the limits of terrestrial life in alien environments becomes less a footnote and more a central concern for those tasked with keeping other worlds pristine.
