War in Ukraine: Russia suffers massive overnight attacks

a number of things have been going on in the last 24 hours in various parts of the uh Ukraine War uh up in the north the Russians have continued with their push uh against against the area opposite kiv and they’ve made some progress in two areas one to towards um an area here which they would like to get in into artillery range of KV at lipy and the other one at V Chan Kia where if they could break out they could move further south but so far the ukrainians have actually held that push mainly by redeploying forces from the south in order to combat that push in the north so not much has changed there but it is actually straining the ukrainians a little bit however the ukrainians have hit back in their own way and overnight there were a whole series of attacks in different parts mainly in sevastopol um at the air base at sevastopol itself at Ro Nova risk which is one of the Russian Naval bases in the Kadar region and at several oil refineries in Kadar which is having quite a big effect on the Russian petrochemical uh economy so the ukrainians themselves have been making an effort to hit back and also in belgrod and while all that has been going on President Putin has been in China with XI Jin ping of course they make all the right statements about their unbridgeable um uh um arrangements and their permanent Alliance but in reality what they’re talking about is how far xiin ping is prepared to back the economic need needs of President Putin as he continues with his war in Ukraine

News Wrap: Israel fights resurgence of Hamas militants in northern Gaza

John: Good evening, I’m John Tonight, Israeli forces are again fighting Palestinian militants in northern gaza, an area the military said it had cleared months ago. But Israel’s earlier operations left a security vacuum there, and hamas has taken advantage of it to regroup. In southern gaza, Israel further expanded operations. The military describes what it’s doing now as targeted and precise, not the all-out offensive it’s been promising. And today was memorial day in Israel, the first official commemoration of fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism since the October 7 attacks killed about 1,100 Israelis, mostly civilians. In gaza, the hamas-run health ministry says 35,000 Palestinians have died since the start of the war. They don’t distinguish between civilians and fighters. Russia says part of a 10-story apartment building in the border city of belgorod collapsed under Ukrainian shelling. At least eight people were killed, and 20 others were hurt. In the kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine, Russia continues to gain ground, forcing thousands more civilians to flee. Moscow says Russia has taken four more villages surrounding kharkiv, a total of nine this weekend. Ukraine says Russian advances have forced the withdrawal of at least one battalion. The first person to receive a genetically modified pig kidney transplant has died nearly two months after undergoing the procedure. Rick Slayman’s family said the ground-breaking animal-to-human transplant gave hope to thousands of people on the waiting list for a human organ transplant. Every year, thousands die before an organ becomes available. Doctors said they didn’t have any indication that the 62-year-old Slayman died as a result of the transplant. And filmmaker Roger Corman has died. You may not know the name, but you probably know the careers he helped launch. Corman was known as "King of the B’s," directing roughly 50 low-budget films and producing about 300 more, including the cult classics "Little shop of horrors" and "Attack of the crab monsters." He nurtured the early careers of Jack Nicholson, Ellen burstyn, and Robert de Niro. He gave early opportunities to aspiring directors like martin scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Ron Howard. Some of them gave Corman small roles in their later films, including "Silence of the lambs" and "Apollo 13." Corman received an honorary Oscar in 2009. Roger Corman was 98. Ukraine retaliated heavily, but Russia’s lack of professionalism caused large casualties in Belgorod

Russian officials blamed Kiev for the attack, which came a day after an 18-hour aerial bombardment across Ukraine that the country said killed at least 39 civilians.

Images of Belgorod on social media showed cars on fire and plumes of black smoke rising between damaged buildings as air raid sirens sounded. An attack occurred near a public skating rink in the heart of the city.

RT quoted the Russian Ministry of Defense as saying on Saturday that Kiev used banned weapons in the attack on the city of Belgorod, specifically the Olkha missile system carrying cluster bomb warheads. Russia called the attack a “crime”. This type of weapon has been banned by more than 110 countries under the United Nations convention since 2008 due to the extremely dangerous level it causes to civilians. Its use in densely populated areas could lead to devastating consequences.

The Olkha system is capable of firing 12 guided missiles in a salvo, hitting targets at a maximum range of 70 to 130 km depending on the type of system.

According to the Russian military, another system also used is the Czech-made RM-70 Vampire – this is a heavier upgraded version of the Soviet Union’s BM-21 Grad multi-purpose rocket launcher.

Russian air defenses intercepted most of the missiles, but some of them hit the city. The Russian Defense Ministry added that “in the event of a direct strike by Olkha missiles equipped with cluster bombs… the consequences would be much more serious.”

Previously, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations said that the attack claimed the lives of 14 people, including 2 children, and injured 108 people, including 15 children. “This crime will not go unpunished,” the Russian military said.

The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin had been informed of the situation and that the country’s Health Minister, Mikhail Murashko, had been ordered to join a delegation of medical staff and rescue workers traveling from Moscow to Belgorod.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian newspaper quoted a security source in the country as saying that the Ukrainian Defense Forces attacked Russian military facilities in Belgorod Oblast, but it was the unprofessional actions of the Russian air defense forces that caused the attack. Debris fell in the city center.

According to the Russians, 10 fires broke out in the city after the explosions. An air raid warning was issued and people were urged to seek shelter.

“The Ukrainian Defense Forces are attacking a number of targets, especially military facilities.

The destruction of civilian infrastructure that we are seeing in Belgorod is the result of unprofessional actions by Russian air defense forces as well as deliberate and planned provocations” – source of the Ukrainskaya Pravda newspaper said.

The Russian military accused Kiev of seeking to draw public attention away from its failures on the front lines, as well as inciting Moscow to launch retaliatory attacks of a similar nature. The ministry affirmed that Russia only attacks military targets and infrastructure directly related to these military facilities.

Earlier on Saturday, Moscow officials claimed to have shot down 32 Ukrainian drones over the Moscow, Bryansk, Oryol and Kursk regions of the country.

They also reported that cross-border shelling killed two others in Russia. A man was killed and four others were injured when a rocket struck a private house in the Belgorod region late Friday night, and a 9-year-old child was killed in a separate incident in the Bryansk region.

Cities across western Russia have been regularly attacked by drones since May, and Russian officials say Kiev is the culprit. Ukrainian officials never admitted responsibility for attacks on Russian territory or the Crimean Peninsula. However, previous larger air strikes against Russia followed intense attacks on Ukrainian cities.

Russian drone attacks against Ukraine continued on Saturday, with the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reporting that 10 Iranian-made Shahed drones were shot falls across the Kherson, Khmelnytskyi and Mykolaiv regions.
