The first season of Wayward Pines is a psychological thriller based on a trilogy of novels by Blake Crouch. The series begins with U.S. Secret Service agent Ethan Burke awakening from a car accident trapped in the town of Wayward Pines, Idaho. It becomes clear that this town is impossible to leave, as the phones do not make outgoing calls, it is surrounded by an electric fence, and the residents are under constant camera surveillance. The residents are also forbidden from discussing the past or questioning the present, and those who try to escape are punished through a public execution called a reckoning. Ethan, who has a history of mental illness and hallucinations, begins to question his own sanity as he investigates the community. He is reunited with his wife Theresa and son Ben, but they too are stuck in this place where nothing is as it seems and no one can be trusted. The series is a mystery and sci-fi/fantasy drama that explores the secrets and tensions within the seemingly idyllic town of Wayward Pines.
