The series, which is a historical drama television series created and written by Michael Hirst for the History channel, transports viewers to the brutal and mysterious world of Ragnar Lothbrok, a Viking warrior and farmer who yearns to explore. The broader adventures follow Ragnar, described as the greatest hero of his age, and tell the sagas of the Vikings who had their own laws, art, and architecture, and were mostly farmers, fishermen, craftsmen, and traders.
The television series originally ran from 2013 to 2020. A sequel series titled Vikings: Valhalla subsequently premiered on Netflix on February 25, 2022.
