The television series Vikings follows the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok, a Viking warrior and farmer who yearns to explore, in a historical drama created and written by Michael Hirst for the History channel. In the eighth episode of the first season, titled Sacrifice, a traditional pilgrimage takes place to Uppsala to thank the gods. This journey brings a torrent of emotions for Ragnar, Lagertha, and Athelstan. Ragnar, who is pulling farther away from his wife, goes to make peace with the death of his unborn son. Meanwhile, Lagertha is still reeling from her miscarriage and wants to find out from the gods if more sons are in her future. As the Vikings come together to sacrifice and give thanks to their gods, Athelstan discovers just how strong his Christian faith still is. The series itself transports viewers to the brutal and mysterious world of Ragnar Lothbrok, depicting the sagas of the greatest hero of his age.
