Topaze is a 1951 French comedy film directed by Marcel Pagnol and starring Fernandel, Hélène Perdrière, and Marcel Vallée. The film is based on Pagnol's own 1928 play of the same name. Albert Topaze is a sincere schoolteacher who is addicted to rote morality and works at a private school run by the money-grubbing M. Muche. M. Muche has a daughter who is also a teacher and makes cynical use of the knowledge that Topaze loves her. Topaze's naive honesty ultimately brings him an unjust dismissal, making him fair game for the aunt of his private pupil, who is actually the mistress of a crooked politician named Regis. Regis needs an honest-seeming front man, and artful Suzy Courtois works to keep Topaze on the string as steadily escalating disillusion leads to a moral crisis.
