Overview

The 2019 film The Rifleman is a war, drama, and history movie directed by Dzintars Dreibergs. The story follows sixteen-year-old Arturs, whose love story is interrupted by the First World War. After losing his mother and his home, Arturs finds some consolation in joining the army, as this marks the first time national battalions are allowed in the Russian Empire. However, the reality of war is far from what Arturs imagined, proving to be brutal and painful rather than glorious or fair. As the conflict continues, Arturs loses both his father and his brother, leaving him completely alone. There is no progress made toward the promised quick resolution of the war and timely return home, leaving Arturs with the notion that he alone cares about his survival and return. The film is an adaptation of a novel by Aleksandrs Grins, which was based on the author's real experience as a Latvian rifleman during the first world conflict.
