The Old Gun is a 1975 film set in Montauban during the year 1944. The narrative follows Julien Dandieu, a surgeon working at a local hospital. As the German army enters the city, Julien becomes frightened for the safety of his family. He enlists the help of his friend Francois to transport his wife and daughter to a remote village where Julien owns an old castle. The plan is for his family to seek refuge in this countryside location. One week later, Julien travels to the village with the intention of reuniting with his wife and daughter for the weekend. Upon his arrival, however, he discovers that the German military has occupied the village. The film explores the conflict that arises as Julien encounters the enemy forces while attempting to reach his family. The story highlights the tension of the era as the occupation spreads from the city into the surrounding rural areas where the surgeon had hoped to find sanctuary for his loved ones.
