The episode “Red Rum,” the twelfth installment of the first season of The Mentalist, follows former celebrity psychic‑medium Patrick Jane as he works with the California Bureau of Investigation to solve a teenage homicide. The victim is a high‑school boy whose actions set off a chain of events that culminated in his death. According to the episode’s synopsis, the boy had antagonized a local woman who describes herself as a witch after he killed her cat. The murder therefore appears to be linked to the tension between the teenager and the self‑proclaimed witch, prompting Jane to focus his investigation on the dynamics of that relationship.

Jane’s signature method—using observation, suggestion and psychological manipulation—takes center stage when he devises a “mental­ist trap” intended to draw out the individual responsible for the killing.
