The story follows Michael Henchard, an out-of-work hay-trusser who gets drunk at a fair and sells his wife and child to a sailor for five guineas. After the horror of his act sets in, Henchard swears off alcohol for twenty-one years and builds a successful life, eventually becoming rich, respected, and the mayor of Casterbridge.
