Overview

The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis is an American sitcom that aired on the CBS network from 1959 to 1963. The television series and a number of its episode scripts were adapted from a 1951 collection of short stories written by Max Shulman. Shulman had previously written a feature film adaptation of his stories for MGM in 1953 titled The Affairs of Dobie Gillis. The plot of the series centers on the life of Dobie Gillis, who is depicted as a teenager and young adult. Alongside his best friend, a beatnik named Maynard G. Krebs, Dobie navigates the various challenges of his life. These struggles include his experiences in high school, the military, and college, as well as his interactions with his parents. The narrative follows Dobie as he aspires to attain his goals while contending with these surrounding forces. The production serves as a notable example of television programming derived from established literary works and prior cinematic efforts during the mid-twentieth century.
