Overview

The Familiar of Zero is a 2006 television series centered on a student named Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière. She attends the Tristain Academy of Magic, where she is known as Louise the Zero due to her poor spell-casting skills and long name. During a significant second-year examination, Louise attempts to summon a familiar. In folklore, a familiar is often a small animal, such as a cat, dog, or bird, that serves as a spirit. However, Louise instead summons Saito Hiraga, who is a normal teenager from Tokyo. This unexpected result leaves Louise burdened with an unconventional companion and forces Saito into the life of a familiar. The term familiar typically refers to a member of a high official's household or something well-known and easily recognized, though it can also imply a level of informal friendliness. As the series progresses, Louise and Saito must navigate their new reality as they remain stuck together following the failed summoning test.
