Overview

The Executioner is a 2009 drama film directed and released in South Korea with a runtime of one hour and thirty-eight minutes. The film imagines the resumption of the death penalty, depicting an execution scheduled to be carried out in twelve years that creates a hostile and stifling atmosphere among guards in a jail. This environment has profound effects on the dehumanization of Jae-kyoung, a young, newly appointed guard. Despite the harsh setting, Jae-kyoung happens to find that a cold-blooded colleague of his, Jong-ho, possesses some humane traits. On the final day, the executioners involved discover that the process entails more than simply greasing up rusty execution equipment, realizing that they are not just carrying out a routine, but changing the course of life. The screenplay for the drama was written by Young Ok Kim, who is a Pusan International Film Festival-winning screenwriter.
