Overview

The Commander is a 2023 war, history, and drama film directed and released during the early phases of World War II. Set during a dark night in the early phases of World War II, the Italian Royal Navy submarine Cappellini sinks an armed merchant ship that was sailing with its lights out. Following this event, submarine commander Salvatore Todaro makes a historical decision to save twenty-six shipwrecked Belgians who would have otherwise drowned in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, with the intention of disembarking them at the nearest safe harbor. In order to accommodate the survivors on board his submarine, Todaro is forced to navigate on the surface of the water for three days. This action leaves the vessel visible to enemy forces, thereby endangering both his own life and the lives of his men. The film has a runtime of two hours and premiered on October 31, 2023, in Italy.
