The Bohemian 2022

Overview

The Bohemian is a 2022 period biographical drama film written and directed by Petr Václav. The story follows the life and career of the Czech composer Josef Mysliveček, who lived from 1737 to 1781. Set in 1764, the narrative focuses on Josef as he struggles to establish himself as an opera composer in Venice. Despite the city being populated by many talented and established composers, Josef initially finds the environment difficult to penetrate. He seeks employment as a violinist, which leads him into the orbit of a wealthy young woman. With her assistance, he gains access to salons and eventually becomes the lover of a libertine marquise. She helps him refine his manners, shedding his provincial upbringing, and introduces him to a hedonistic lifestyle free from religious intolerance. As his transformation continues, Josef receives an important commission to write an opera. The film, which has a runtime of two hours and twenty-one minutes, features actors including Vojtěch Dyk, Elena Radonicich, Barbara Ronchi, and Lana Vlady.
