Ash begins his journey in the Johto region, which is described as a largely unexplored area that is thickly populated with Pokemon that are entirely new to him and his friends. Ash is accompanied by his partner, Pikachu, as he travels. The television series Pokemon, originating in 1997, is a Japanese anime series that was created as a supplement to video game franchises. The anime series broadly presents the same story used in the individual video games, accompanied by a number of storyline deviations.
