Overview
Outlander is a historical fantasy television series based on the book series of the same name by author Diana Gabaldon. Developed by Ronald D. Moore, the show premiered on the Starz network on August 9, 2014. The production is a collaboration between Tall Ship Productions, Story Mining and Supply Company, and Left Bank Pictures in association with Sony Pictures Television. Filming for the first season began in Scotland in the fall of 2013. The series follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously transported back in time to 1743 while honeymooning in Scotland. Upon her arrival, she is thrust into an unfamiliar and dangerous world where she is forced to marry Jamie, a chivalrous and romantic Scottish warrior. This situation ignites a passionate affair that leaves Claire torn between two different men and two irreconcilable lives. The series, which spanned from 2014 to 2026, features cast members including Caitríona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton, and Richard Rankin. The show concluded its run with a series finale in 2026.
