Overview
My Old Lady is a comedy-drama film released in 2014. The film was written and directed by Israel Horovitz in his feature directorial debut, and it is based on his 1996 play of the same name. The cast includes Maggie Smith, Kevin Kline, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Dominique Pinon.
The story follows Mathias Gold, a down-on-his-luck New Yorker who inherits a vast Parisian apartment from his estranged father. When Mathias arrives in France to sell the domicile, he is shocked to discover a live-in tenant who is not prepared to budge. He learns that the apartment is a viager, an ancient French real estate system with complex rules regarding its resale. Under this contract, the feisty Englishwoman Mathilde Girard, who has lived in the apartment with her daughter Chloé for many years, can collect monthly payments from Mathias until her death.
