The episode opens with the struggling craft centre housed in the old mill at Morton Fendle. The enterprise, which has been losing money, has attracted a number of local investors who now suspect that they have been cheated by the man who runs the operation, Alan Hollingsworth. Tension rises when Hollingsworth’s wife, the glamorous Simone, disappears under mysterious circumstances. Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby, the senior officer who investigates serious crimes throughout the fictional county of Midsomer, interprets the disappearance as a possible kidnapping and places Hollingsworth under close surveillance.

While under observation, Hollingsworth manages to evade the police. He is seen carrying a bundle of cash, suggesting a possible financial motive linked to the failing craft centre. A neighbour of Hollingsworth follows him to a rendez‑vous point, but the woman is killed in a bizarre road accident that appears unrelated to the investigation at first glance. The incident adds a further layer of intrigue and raises questions about whether the accident is connected to the missing Simone case.

The investigation takes a dramatic turn when Hollingsworth’s body is discovered, confirming that he has been murdered. Shortly after, Simone reappears alive, prompting Barnaby to reassess the earlier kidnapping theory. He comes to suspect that Simone, perhaps with the assistance of a friend, staged her own disappearance in order to create the illusion of a kidnapping. Despite this line of reasoning, Barnaby is unable to produce concrete evidence that would substantiate the theory in court.

The episode concludes with the unresolved status of the case: the murder of Alan Hollingsworth remains unsolved, and the alleged deception surrounding Simone’s disappearance cannot be proven. As is typical for the series, the tranquil façade of the Midsomer community is once again shattered by a complex web of financial desperation, deception, and violent death, leaving the residents to grapple with the lingering uncertainty left by the investigation.
