The episode opens with the discovery of Agnes Gray’s body in the river. Although the water suggests drowning, the autopsy reveals that she did not die by immersion. Gray, a woman whose life was devoted to animals, had recently made large donations to animal charities, a fact that soon becomes a thread in the investigation. Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby and his partner, Sergeant Gavin Troy, are called to the scene and begin to untangle the circumstances surrounding her death.

The resolution restores a measure of order to the village, but not before the episode allows a quieter development: a tentative romance begins to blossom between Cully Barnaby and Nico Bentley, offering a contrast to the darkness of the murders.
