Overview

Memento is a 2000 American neo-noir psychological thriller film written and directed by Christopher Nolan. The screenplay is based on the short story Memento Mori by Jonathan Nolan. The film features Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano, and Mark Boone Junior. The story follows Leonard Shelby, a former insurance investigator who suffers from a rare and untreatable form of short-term memory loss known as anterograde amnesia following a head injury. Although he retains memories of his life prior to the accident, he cannot recall events that occurred fifteen minutes earlier. To navigate his life and track down the man who raped and murdered his wife, Leonard relies on notes and tattoos on his body to serve as clues. The narrative unfolds in reverse to piece together the puzzle of his wife's murder as Leonard attempts to determine where he is going and why. The film portrays his grim quest as he struggles to maintain his purpose despite his inability to form new memories.
