The program follows the professional and personal challenges faced by Dr. Marcus Welby, a compassionate general practitioner known for his kind bedside manner, and his younger associate, Dr. Steven Kiley. Created by David Victor, the series focuses on the two doctors as they attempt to treat patients as individuals during an era of specialized medicine and increasingly indifferent physicians. Robert Young portrays the title character, while James Brolin plays his assistant. The show also features actors Elena Verdugo and Pamela Hensley. A pilot episode titled A Matter of Humanities aired as an ABC Movie of the Week on March 26, 1969. Produced by David Victor and David J. O'Connell, the series became a notable success in United States television history, ranking as the number one series during the 1970 television year. The program concluded its run in 1976.
