Produced by Xebec, a division of Production I.G., the twenty-four episode adaptation aired in Japan from April to September 2000. The series features creative input from Ken Akamatsu and was directed by Yoshiaki Iwasaki. The story follows Keitaro, who made a childhood promise to a friend to meet at Tokyo University. He encounters various tenants, including two Tokyo University applicants who might be his childhood friend, as well as residents like Shinobu and Motoko. Following the initial television run, the series was followed by a bonus DVD episode, Christmas and Spring television specials, and a three-episode original video animation entitled Love Hina Again.
